PCB Components and Their Functions

In the field of circuit analysis, there are several key points of core network analysis value worth our attention, that is, resistance, capacitance and inductance.

1, Resistance

as a component that can impede the flow of current, the size of its resistance determines the strength of the current impediment, in the circuit plays an important role in voltage division, current limitation, etc., is widely used in various types of circuit scenarios, the stability of the circuit as well as the distribution of power and other aspects have an indispensable impact.

 2, Capacitance
it can store charge, through the electric field between the pole plate to realize the storage and release of energy, in the circuit often plays an important role in isolation of DC, AC, coupling, filtering, etc., according to different capacitance values and circuit connections, can be flexibly adjusted to the signal transmission characteristics of the circuit and the effect of electrical energy processing.

 3, Inductance

is to rely on the coil generated by the self-induced electromotive force to impede the current changes in the AC circuit has a unique performance, such as filtering, choking and other applications, can play an effective role in regulating the alternating current, to ensure that the circuit operates in accordance with the expected way.

Linear passive components, such as the above resistance, capacitance and inductance, they have linear electrical characteristics, its component parameters will not change with the circuit voltage, current changes, in the application of the circuit, often follow the basic circuit laws, such as Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's law, etc., can be constructed through the reasonable combination and connection of a variety of different functions of the circuit, for the realization of functions such as signal amplification, waveforms, transformations, energy conversion and other functions based on the foundation. The circuit can be constructed with various functions through reasonable combination and connection, laying the foundation for realizing functions such as signal amplification, waveform transformation and energy conversion.

In the application of circuits, nonlinear and active semiconductor devices are significantly different from linear passive devices. Nonlinear semiconductor devices, their electrical characteristics show a nonlinear relationship, such as diodes, the relationship between current and voltage is not a simple proportional relationship, there are forward conduction, reverse cutoff and other unique characteristics, which makes them in the rectifier, limiting, voltage regulator and other circuits have a unique place to use.

Active semiconductor devices, such as transistors, they are not only able to control and amplify electrical signals, and their own external power supply to provide energy to ensure normal operation. Unlike linear passive devices, which rely on external input signals to passively generate a response, active semiconductor devices are able to actively process, regulate, and amplify electrical signals in circuits to realize more complex circuit functions, such as constructing various types of amplifiers, oscillators, and logic circuits, which greatly expands the flexibility of circuit design and the range of functions that can be realized.

In conclusion, an in-depth understanding of the core network analysis values of resistance, capacitance, and inductance, as well as the differences in the use of linear passive, nonlinear, and active semiconductor devices in circuits, is essential for accurately grasping the principles of circuits, and efficiently designing and analyzing circuits.

Passive Linear PCB Components and Their Functions

At the lowest level of abstraction in a circuit system, resistance, capacitance, and inductance characterize the passive response of a component to the currents and voltages in the system.
In the case of resistance, it is always present, and when analogized to concepts in the mechanical realm, it is akin to friction. We know that in the real world, frictionless kinematics is an idealized simplification of surface interactions and does not actually exist; similarly, zero resistance is not achievable in the real physical world. Although a resistive component labeled as zero ohms is readily available on the market, this really just means that the resistance value it provides is negligible and near zero in the vast majority of cases, not zero resistance in the true sense of the word, and so does not contradict it.
The two parameters, capacitance and inductance, do not necessarily co-exist in a circuit component. Both of them represent the reactance of the component, that is, the hindering effect on the alternating current; while the resistance embodied is the hindering effect on the direct current, the two measurements of resistance, capacitance and inductance together constitute the vector component of impedance. It should be noted that resistance can only be negative under certain circumstances, such as when non-static resistors and non-linear devices are involved; unlike reactance, which can easily be positive or negative, with a positive value representing the reactance characteristics of an inductor and a negative value representing the reactance characteristics of a capacitor. More critically, the size of the reactance is closely related to the frequency, capacitance in the low-frequency state can play its role, while the inductance in the high-frequency situation is more advantageous. Virtually every circuit component contains a certain amount of resistance and reactance of its own, and if a component is not designed to provide a specific resistance or reactance parameter, but inadvertently contains either, then this is known as parasitics.
With the full realization that idealized circuit components do not provide a complete picture of real-world circuit response, let's take a closer look at three important components that act as the basic building
blocks of a circuit:

 Resistors

Resistors act primarily as a barrier to DC current. When there are two resistors that are trying to achieve the same voltage drop across their terminals, the one with the higher resistance value needs to have a higher current flow through it. One of the main roles played by resistors in a circuit is to act as a current limiter for sensitive components, limiting the amount of current. However, in the process of limiting the current, the resistor generates ohmic heat based on its power dissipation. This heat must be routed away from the location where it is generated and from any temperature-sensitive components, otherwise it can lead to problems such as malfunctions, shortened service life, and even fire hazards. Resistors are also commonly used for voltage dividing operations, biasing components, and terminating transmission lines.

Capacitors

A capacitor stores energy in the form of an electric field by creating a state of charge separation between its two plates. The charging and discharging process of a capacitor is actually equivalent to the time constant corresponding to the product of its resistance and capacitance. Generally speaking, a smaller capacitor stores less energy, but it is able to respond more sensitively and dynamically to changing circuit conditions; conversely, a larger capacitor stores more energy, but responds less dynamically to circuit changes. Since the value of the capacitor changes with frequency, its reactance increases at low frequencies and decreases to zero at high frequencies (the exact change in value depends on the parameters of the capacitor itself), based on this characteristic, the capacitor can be used as a high-pass filter, which is capable of blocking direct current, while allowing fast enough alternating current to pass through. Capacitors also regulate signals to reduce their fluctuating variance, adjust antenna frequencies, and ensure consistent and reliable power distribution throughout the electrical system.

Inductors

An inductor is in many ways the opposite of a capacitor, a complementary “mirror image”: it stores energy in a magnetic field, its reactance increases with frequency, and it filters AC signals as DC current passes through it. However, it also performs many of the same or complementary functions as a capacitor, such as ripple filtering, circuit tuning, and building switching mode power supplies. Inductors are usually made by wrapping insulated wire around a toroidal ferromagnetic core and passing it through the core.
